  Praise for Grant's Successful Surgery
Bruce and Tammy report that Grant's surgery went great and that he is recovering well.  Praise be to God!  Thank you for praying.  Please also remember the next couple weeks of healing and several months of physical therapy.

Home Again! (Praise Report Regarding Heather and Thank-you to the Congregation)
In the wee hours of Monday morning Heather's blood pressure steadily declined for four hours before holding at normal values.  In the morning, her bloodwork showed that her liver enzyme levels were improving.  And late yesterday afternoon we finally came home.

Thank you for all your prayers; praise be to God who hears and answers prayer!

Thank you also for all the visits, gifts, and inquiries after our well-being.  The love of believers for each other is a witness to the character of God our Father and of Jesus our Lord.  We rejoice in Him over you all and over the pleasant and comfortable providences of the last twenty-four hours.

Baptism this Lord's Day (?) / Praise for Healthy Babies and Mommy
Thank you all so much for your thoughts, visits, calls, and prayers.  Yesterday at 12:05 p.m., Jonathan Isaac Hakim was born, followed by Beatrice Christi at 12:06.  He weighed 5lbs 12oz, she 5lbs 6oz.  He 19 1/4 inches, she 19.  Everyone is doing great, and it looks like we may even be in worship on the Lord's Day (in which case, with the elders' permission, I hope to baptize Jon and Bea in the morning).  If you would like, you may see more photos [here].

Praise God for Tucker Harvey Doughan
From Adam:
Yup,
My wife had a baby. PRAISE GOD!! We have another member of the Doughan family. Tucker Harvey Doughan joined us June 24th at about 12:22 pm. He is 8 pounds 6 ounces and 19 inches long. He has dark skin and lots of dark hair. He looks a little like his sister. We had a little scare when Kim's blood pressure and pulse dropped once she recieved her epidural. I was freaking out, however everyone is okay now. Lilly and Thatcher are excited for Tucker to come home. We got Tucker a tiny set of football pads to protect him from Thatcher. We are blessed. Thank you God.

Praise Report for Joel De Groot
This praise report is late, as it was Tuesday night when Jo phoned with the joyful news.  Joel's surgery was so completely successful that there isn't even any aftercare needed.  Praise the Lord!

  Genesis 25:22
Thank you all for your prayers.  I write from Saint Mary's Mercy Hospital in Livonia, Michigan.  After tests and diagnostics, it seems that Heather's bleeding was due to a little overactivity.  As for tightness and tenseness in the uterus, that was likely due to the twins taking more space than those of previous pregnancies.  Praise the Lord!  The seven of us look forward to worshiping with you again soon.

Reminders for Tomorrow, Wed 1/21, and an Update on Heather
TOMORROW, Wednesday, January 21 (all in the Iowa State Bank basement)

7:00a.m. - Orange City Community Development meeting.  I've been sitting in on a couple weeks of these.  If you would like to help lead in the community's being intentional about how it would like to grow (including how to be more godly as a city), please come.  This is another way for us to love our neighbor.
7:00p.m. - Prayer Meeting.  Since last week was canceled, the lesson will be the same (which is a nice providence for a pastor who's spent Mon and Tue occupied with other things).  One thing we see about true, healthy churches in the New Testament is how significant and prominent a thing group prayer is in the life of the church.  Do we not rest upon God alone for all good?  Ought we not then call upon His name together for that good?
8:15p.m. - Elders' Meeting.  Again, these are PUBLIC meetings.  And the elders would be grateful for congregational input.  You may also benefit from the devotionals (we're going through1 Corinthians at the moment), which are first up (in case you don't want to stay until 11 like your dear, devoted ruling elders whom I hope you appreciate and for whom I hope you pray!)

update on Heather... she had surgery today; Dr. Shepherd says she did great, and we are praying for a quick and complete recovery.  We're so grateful to the Lord for yet another new mercy; they are new every morning!  And afternoon!  And evening!  Praise be to His name.

  Announcements, Praise, Prayer Request
Congregational Announcement: Please remember the workday at the new building on Saturday!  Come when you can; leave when you must.
Community Announcements (requested by others to announce to the church)
Praise: Perry Krosschell is doing great--back to work, not really limited in what he can do, etc.!
Prayer Request: Heather Hakim is pregnant and began bleeding this week; the doctor says she is probably miscarrying, but is trying to help save the baby.  We'll find out more tomorrow (Fri).

  Shiyan's Surgery Successful
Shiyan Vander Plaats had successful surgery on her mouth yesterday, and Jean was actually able to bring her home the same day!  The doctor was very pleased.  She will need one more for her nose.  Thanks for praying!

Update with more details from Jean:
Thank you all for your prayers for Shiyan yesterday.  She did wonderfully!!  She went to sleep so calmly, no resisting the mask at all, and woke up just as peacefully.  Her surgeon decided to just reconstruct her upper lip for now -- that alone took him 2 1/2 hours.  He thought that doing the nose at the same time might be too much for her, and that it would also benefit her to be a bit older for that.  She is managing the pain well with a little help from codeine, but she looks horrible!  Very swollen and bruised with stitches sticking out of her lips and going up to her nose.  She'll be on a liquid diet for at least a week.  We were very thankful to come home before the snowfall last night.  Thank you all so much for holding her up in prayer!
Jean

  Karissa home and happy
She was released from the hospital at 8 p.m. tonight. Already, it appears that giving her the medicine orally will be a challenge, but it's so much better than seeing her tied to that IV! We praise God for His mercy and thank Him for all your kindnesses to us. The Hakim Family.

Prayer Request from the Hakims, Praise Report from Robin
Karissa has pneumonia and is receiving IV antibiotics overnight at the hospital tonight. Thanks for praying!

Also, I just got this from Robin regarding yesterday and today's procedures. Praise the Lord!
Hello Pastor James and Bob,
Thank you for your prayers! I am home and feeling okay. I have several clots in my jugular and subclavian vein. They are not new clots. The cardiovascular surgeon is almost positive that they are old clots that did not completely dissolve. This is common, I guess. They are attached to the walls of the vein, so they are not dangerous and will not move. They will just cause some pain and swelling now and then, because they affect my circulation a little. I will continue on my blood thinner and hopefully they will eventually dissolve, or my blood will find new pathways and the pain will subside. I also have some nerve damage from my original, large blood clot. It is not severe, however, so that is wonderful! The pain and swelling is being caused by the clots. So, this is better news than I was even praying for! I love it when God does something even better than I think is possible!
Thanks again for your prayers,
Robin

  Joyful News from the Wassinks
I received the following from Cornie this morning. Let us continue to pray that God would grant them blessing and favor in every area of their lives and continue to establish the work of Matt's hands in the gospel ministry.

Pastor Hakim,

I thought that some members of your congregation would be interested in learning that Matt and Hannah Wassink were blessed with the birth of a son on Thursday, September 25. Case Benjamin Wassink and mother are both doing well.

Matt is really enjoying his experience at Pastor’s College.

Blessings,

Cornie Wassink

Those who are suffering, have recently suffered, or may yet suffer (I think that covers just about all of us) may want to read [this article] over at 'Harvest'ed Text - Other about how God gave the Hakims peace in their recent trial
Those who have never read JI Packer (see the Theology Thursday series on his book, Knowing God) may have their reading appetites whetted as they benefit by [these two quotes] that intersect with the life of our congregation over at 'Harvest'ed Text - Other

  Praise, Prayer Request
The Lord has taken our child, probably a few weeks ago. All of our children are more His than they are ever ours. We thank Him that Ezekiel had such a short, easy life. I suspect that each of us who are in Christ will from eternity view our earthly life as having been short and easy, as we look back upon the mercy with which our Lord carried us through it.

His peace is ruling my and Heather's hearts in a substantive manner, and we are grateful to our Savior who was once "gestationally 6 weeks old" and went on to absorb our Hell and conquer death. These are all matters of praise, and when you pray for us, do not forget to praise His glorious name.

Matters for further prayer: Heather is not done miscarrying yet and may need a d&c; there are various threats to health associated with that. Emmet in particular has taken it hard and has been beside himself with grief. Please pray for the Holy Spirit's ministry to my son to give him faith, love, joy, and peace in Christ.

Thank you all for your fellowship in Christ. See you tonight for prayer at 7.

James

  Praise Report from Bill Nibbelink
Bill had his follow-up appointment today.

The biopsy showed zero evidence of any abnormal tissue. The cultures showed zero evidence of any harmful bacteria. This means that the only remaining health issue is the amount of acid being produced and the healing of tissue that has been irritated/damaged by that acid. The acid is easily treated with medication, which he is already taking and to which he is already responding. The tissue is then expected to "heal itself."

We continue to thank God for these good reports and pray that He will continue to grant healing. Thanks for praying!

  Good Report from the Nibbelinks
Bill had his scope early today, and they discovered some pretty intense gastritis (inflammation of the tissue in his stomach lining and esophagus). That might sound bad to you, but what they did not find was any perforation of the esophagus. That means that the pain wasn't his heart at all, and that his condition is as treatable as it was painful. We thank God with them for His tender mercy and pray that the treatment is effective and the healing complete. Thanks to all who prayed.

MIDWEEK MEETING AT PIONEER HOME went well. Thanks to Gary Vander Hart, Jean Vander Plaats, and all of the children who served the residents so graciously. Thank you to all of you who came alongside residents in fellowship and prayer afterward.

NEXT WEEK'S PRAYER MEETING
is a regular prayer meeting at Gary and Jean Vander Plaats's in Ireton. Wouldn't it be neat if we had so many people who wanted to pray, and so little time and space that we had to have multiple meeting locations? Let's have that problem!

JOANN VANDER PLAATS UPDATE -
Dr. Allen brought his entire surgical team back; they found the leak; and fixed her up. They tell us that the recovery schedule is still about the same. Please continue to pray for her and Ron.

DARLENE FEDDERS UPDATE -
Darlene is able to walk some, will have stitches out Tuesday, and maybe even water aerobics Wednesday.

JoAnn Vander Plaats's Successful Bypass Surgery
Dr. Allen, the surgeon, tells us that she had four grafts (bypasses) and did great. She won't be coming home until the Lord's Day at the earliest. She will be in a room tomorrow. Thanks for praying; praise the Lord, and keep praying!

  Praise Report: Leo's Eye Surgery
Leo DeGroot had his eye surgery today. They got him in early and finished more quickly than expected. Those are miracles in modern medicine. And here's a miracle of modern medicine: the procedure went splendidly. The surgeon is very pleased, and Leo will be going back for a checkup tomorrow. Praise God for His miraculous mercy, and pray for Leo for continued recovery.

Praise and Request for Jessica Ward
Jes's surgery went well, but recovery is a bit of a bear. She's in a fair amount of pain and has been feeling rather ill (perhaps from all the blood that went to her stomach). Please pray for God's nearness to her in recovery and that it would be swift. Thank you!

  Praise Report from Leo DeGroot
Thank you for praying for the DeGroots. All went well in Sioux City today. He was a good candidate for the treatment and received the first--and possibly last--dose. He should be seeing much better in a couple weeks and will have a follow-up on March 27th. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
